What We Do


Girl Up Initiative Uganda aims to educate and build the confidence of girls, women and youth through our holistic education, economic empowerment, and youth engagement programs in the slums of Kampala, Uganda. There is a HUGE need and demand for our programs to address the specific challenges faced by girls, women and youth living in urban slums.


Why We Do It


of women between the ages of 15-49 in Uganda  reported having experienced gender-based violence.

of young women in Uganda give birth before the age of 18 years. (UNICEF, 2011)


of girls in Uganda drop out of school because of early marriage. (UBOS, 2011)


of young people (15 to 24 years) in Uganda are unemployed or work within the informal economy. (World Bank, 2008)


of the total population of Kampala are living in informal settlements/urban slum areas.


of Kampala youth do not have adequate knowledge about gender-based violence. (Plan International Uganda, 2016)
